An architectural vision made real through high standard engineering

SHARE Bucharest 2018 International Architecture and Engineering Forum that will take place on the 9th of October, has the pleasure to welcome Roland Bechmann as a keynote speaker of the event, sharing with us his comprehensive experience upon the engineering of structures and facades.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that nowadays architecture owns its remarkable expression to innovations and discoveries made in engineering. Many of the iconic buildings, such as Fondation Louis Vuitton by Gehry Partners, with its curvaceous forms, the well known Zaha Hadid characteristic language or the ingenious approaches of OMA (Office for Metropolitan Architecture) could not have been possible without an enthusiastic and devoted team of engineers.

One of the most acclaimed engineering offices, Werner Sobek Stuttgart, will be represented at SHARE Bucharest by Roland Bechmann. The work of Werner Sobek stands throughout the world for engineering, design, and sustainability. The firm has offices in Stuttgart, Dubai, Frankfurt, Istanbul, Moscow, New York, and Buenos Aires. Their work is defined by premium design on the basis of high-class engineering combined with sophisticated green technologies. They work on all types of buildings and materials. Special emphasis lies on lightweight structural design, transparent facade systems, and sustainable building concepts, some of which will be presented to us within this year SHARE forum – Façades and Urban Landscape.

Their philosophy stands for a visionary architecture that could represent an appropriate attitude towards present times. There is an unquestionable need of anticipation involved in the process that challenges contemporary problems regarding architecture. Their inspiration does not reside in traditional forms and materials; everything that is done has to be brand new, involving the last technologies and innovations. The architecture of our own time and the future must exhibit a radically different attitude to the natural environment and its users and to its inherent technology.” The focus of Werner Sobek Stuttgart lies on the engineering of structures and facades.

Roland Bechmann is Managing Director and Partner of the international engineering consultancy Werner Sobek Stuttgart. Born in Berlin, he subsequently moved to Hanover, Germany, where he studied Structural Engineering. Having accomplished his diploma, Roland started working at Werner Sobek Stuttgart and soon rose to be appointed first principal, then general manager, and finally managing director and partner.

Roland heads the department of competitions and is a specialist of project management, lightweight structures and steel constructions. He has extensive experience in various important high rise projects, such as ADAC Headquarters in Munich/Germany, the Hegau Tower in Singen/Germany and the 400 m high Olympic Tower in Nanjing/China. In addition Roland has been in charge of several complex and large-scale projects such as World Expo 2017 in Astana/Kazakhstan and the underground railway station in Stuttgart/Germany.

Since 2013, Roland has been Country Representative of the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.

EXPO 2017 took place in Kazakhstan‘s capital, Astana. Winner of the international architectural competition in 2012 was the Chicago-based consultancy of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill. Werner Sobek advised the winning team on aspects of structural and facade engineering. Special attention was dedicated to the question of how the EXPO site can be used in the future. After the exhibition, most buildings have been changed, disassembled or converted. Those buildings that are deconstructed can be recycled easily. At its heart, Expo City featured the Kazakhstan Pavilion. The spherical structure reached a total height of 100 m and measured approximately 80 m in diameter.

Among Warner Sobek’s many awards we mention: The Fritz Leonhardt Award, the DuPont Benedictus Award, the Design Award of the Industrial Fabrics Association International, the European Gluelam Award, the Fritz Schumacher Award of the Alfred Töpfer Foundation, the ‘Building of the Year’ Award of the Association of Architects and Engineers of Hamburg, the SEAOI Award of Structural Excellence, the RIBA Award, the Hugo Haering Award, the Auguste Perret Prize of the UIA, the Fazlur Khan Medal and the Balthasar Neumann Award.
