Remembering SHARE Sofia 2022

With a fantastic event at SHARE Sofia 2022, we had a wonderful start to the FALL season. With additional events, the conference series will keep going.

Meet the leading experts in architecture in November in one of the cities:

The sixth edition of SHARE Sofia, hosted by The Hyatt Regency Sofia Hotel was a celebration of knowledge exchange with over 250 participants. 

The SHARE Sofia 2022 Forum was organized by SHARE Architects in partnership with the Chamber of Architects in Bulgaria, and with the support of Șișecam (Official Partner), Zumtobel (Main Partner), Aliplast (Main Partner), Etem (Partner), Carea (Partner), City Design Development (Supporter).

Official Opening 

Our event organizers and distinguished guests gave a heartfelt welcome message to start off SHARE Sofia 2022’s official opening.

Great Speaker Presentations

Alper DERINBOĞAZ, Founder Salon Architects, Turkey – “What if we see architecture as an iteration of nature?”

“What if we see architecture as an iteration of nature?” Salon Alper Derinboğaz’s architectural production investigates the origins of architecture through the emergence of natural forms, the history of human inhabitation and its connection to earth in order to find foundational ways to rethink and reshape the relationship between humans and our environment.

In Turkey and throughout Europe, Alper Derinbogaz has gained recognition as a promising and significant architect. His work explores the potential of the physical environment through the link between space and time. He founded the architecture firm Salon, which was chosen as one of Archdaily’s Best Young Practices of 2020. His designs, which range from elaborate cultural institutions to art installations, are all unified by a desire to elucidate and consider the fundamental components of location and concept.

Gilma Teodora GYLYTĖ, Co-founder DO Architects, Lithuania – “Continous Transformations”

Gilma leads the projects which create positive impact and inspires others around. She created the concept and the prototype design of Naugarduko street-park in Vilnius, which led to the creation of the official City of Vilnius Street Design Manual – the first in the Baltics. She is well-known for transformations of Soviet-era projects, such as State-Kindergarten “Peledziukas”, where the restrictive kindergarten routine was significantly changed, and Urban Conversion of Ogmios quarter from a military base to a public and commercial area. Gilma works a lot in integrating contemporary architecture into protected heritage areas, such as VainiaiPallace Conversion into a public space, food market, offices and apartments; or an ongoing Lyceum and Hotel complex project near the protected heritage site of baroque Church of St. Philip and St. Jacob, and other sites.

Tsvetan  PETROV, Managing director Ivo Petrov Architects, Bulgaria – “The dialogue between inside and outside space through the design of the façade”

The presentation uncovered the process, challenges and the creation of facade design for two projects with different purposes but with the same mission – improving people’s habitat at different stages of their lives. Tsvetan Petrov presented the complex design of the facade of an office building located on one of the main city boulevards and how it corresponds to the purpose of the building and the main concept – the single human in the focus of the project. The second project presented is the award-winning park school, where through the design of the facade the office was able to combine traditional facade materials with modern functionality.

Next, Tsvetan Petrov took the stage and gave insightful and innovative remarks. Arch. Tsvetan Petrov is the General Manager of the Bulgarian studio “Ivo Petrov-Architects”. He is a graduate from from the Faculty of Architecture of UACEG in Sofia, Bulgaria and has specialized in L’ecole National Superieured’architecture de Bretagne in Rennes, France. For the last 15 years, he has developed the studio and managed to turn IPA into one of the most successful companies for architecture, urbanism, and interior design in Bulgaria.Always striving for world standards, he is constantly introducing new technologies in the company, growing the team, and has the trust of some of the largest investors.

Rex BOMBARDELLI, Associate Design Director 2Portzamparc, France – “The big, the beautiful and the little guy”

We were interested to listen“The big, the beautiful and the little guy”, the presentation of Rex Bombardelli, Associate Design Director 2Portzamparc from France, about the China National Convention Center, a story about one of the biggest buildings in the world.

Rex Bombardelli graduated in 2004 from the University of Florence (Italy), the year he joined 2Portzamparc. He was made design director in 2017 and associate in 2019. Today, his areas of expertise include cultural institutions and music facilities: operas house, concert hall and theather. He is responsible for several site monitoring in France and abroad, such as the Shanghai Music Conservatory or the National Conference Center in Beijing, whose path he has followed since the conception.

Bernard STORCH, Partner, PLP Architecture, UK

Bernard has exceptional experience on a wide range of commercial, residential, institutional and hospitality projects in the UK, Europe and the Middle East.Recently completed work includes the award-winning Sky Central, which provides large and flexible workspaces for 3,500 employees of Sky Television along with multiple food, sports and leisure amenities. He also completed the conceptual design for an extension for a luxury hotel in London, concept proposals for an office redevelopment in the historic heart of Milan in Italy, the conceptual design of a mixed-use high-rise development at Vauxhall on the bank of the River Thames, and a new headquarters building at Heron Quays West in Canary Wharf.

Angel ZAHARIEV, founder AAA studio –“Dynamic facades”

The idea of the importance of dynamic design of facades was revealed byAnghelZahariev. Angel Zahariev graduated in MA Architecture from UACG in Sofia. In 2004, he got a post-diploma specialization at the Institute of Housing and Urban Development Studies.

Angel Zahariev has worked in the design of many key projects that have significant influence in contemporary Bulgarian architecture, such as Business Park Sofia, Capital Fort, Sky Fort, Muzeiko or GTower.Moreover, he has been a lecturer, tutor, jury and participant in numerous workshops, symposiums, conferences and competitions in Bulgaria and Europe.Angel Zahariev is one of the founders of Grupa Grad NGO, where together with other young and popular Bulgarian architects he strives for positive change in public architecture and urban planning in Bulgaria.

Andreas VARDAS, Founder Vardas Studio, Cyprus – “facades in the sun”

Andreas Vardas came from Cyprus to present “facades in the sun”, concepts and ideas about how facade design should take light into account.Andreas Vardas is the founder of VARDAS STUDIO architects + designers. His practice in Paphos has grown since 1997, designing and procuring a number of widely published projects that bear his unique aesthetic. He received his architectural education in the Bartlett School of Architecture, and practiced in a London office before returning to Cyprus and setting up his own practice.
Vardas and Vardas Studio have a focus on residential architecture. The practice’s main output is bespoke private houses, but it does include larger residential developments, office and commercial buildings, and public spaces.

Gijs RIKKEN, Associate Design Director MVRDV, The Netherlands – “Beyond the traditional facade”

Innovative facade design concepts were presented by Gijs Rikken. He is an architect and Associate Design Director at MVRDV since 2007. At MVRDV, Gijs is responsible for the design and execution of a wide variety of projects, ranging from large-scale, complex buildings to detailed innovative material research. Key projects include such completed buildings as the Glass Farm in Schijndel, The Crystal Houses in Amsterdam and the Balancing Barn in Suffolk, England. Other defining works consist of the winning design for the Urban Hybrid in Emmen, the Coral Tower in Sydney and the Theater aan de Parade in Den Bosch. He is currently responsible for the development and construction of Valley, a 75,000m2 mixed-use building in Amsterdam which boasts three residential, green-covered towers and a publicly accessible, vertical park.

Vlad Sebastian RUSU, Founder Vlad Sebastian Rusu Architecture Office Romania – “In situ. Contemporary aproach through patrimonial context”

His presentation was about Rehabilitation of the Cultural Palace in Blaj, Romania Medical clinic in the historic center of Cluj, A new age for the Firefighters Tower in Cluj

Vlad Sebastian Rusu emphasized the significance of cultural aspects in relation to façades. Vlad Sebastian Rusu graduated in 2006 from the Faculty of Architecture and Urban Planning in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where he is currently an Associate Professor and Director of the Urban Planning and Technical Sciences Department. His professional activity is divided between research and design of architecture and urban planning projects, publication of studies, articles and books, support and participation in national and international conferences and exhibitions. His projects cover a wide range of topics and programs, from architecture and restoration to urbanism and urban design, his professional activity being recognized and awarded nationally and internationally: the European Union Grand Prize for Cultural Heritage 2017/ Europa Nostra Awards and two nominations for European Union Prize for Contemporary Architecture Mies van der Rohe in 2017 and 2021.

Antoaneta TOPALOVA, managing partner URBA-A LTD, Bulgaria – “TRAPped – the inspiring challenge of shared common spaces”

The presentation focused on the history and current status of Plovdiv’s Kapana (the Trap) – the only creative district in Bulgaria. What were the challenges it faced and how they keep changing with the people and the purposes it shares. Urban architecture and street design within the paradigm of cultural heritage, gentrification and good practices.

Arch. AntoanetaTopalova has numerous publications and interviews in professional and wide-ranging regional, national and foreign publications. She is a participant in numerous national, regional and international discussions, round tables, expert councils and others. Her expert activity includes membership in the Supreme Council for Territorial Urban Planning and Architecture – Sofia (1985 – 1989) and in the OESUT, for 10 years; Higher Expert Council on Territorial and Settlement Planning (1989 – 1993); Management Board of KAB – three mandates until 2007; Management Board of SAB – three mandates until 2010; Member of the Management Board of KAB – RK Plovdiv – 2015.

Filippo INNOCENTI, Director Zaha Hadid Architects, UK

Filippo has worked with Zaha Hadid since 2002. With an architectural background that encompasses cultural facilities, conservation and sustainability, Filippo has specialized in the design of transportation buildings, opening ZHA’s successful entry into the infrastructural sector with the design of the first train stations. Co-director of the firm’s office in Rome, from 2005 to 2012 he has contributed to some of the most significant achievements of the office. His key projects include the multi-awarded Naples-Afragola High-Speed Train Station, the Riyadh KAFD Metro Station, and the Navi Mumbai International Airport. More recently, he has been project director for the New Riyadh Airport and for Shenzhen Xili Transit Hub.

The work of architect Ivo Petrov, founder of Ivo Petrov Architects,was celebrated with the award ceremony of the SHARE OMNIA distinction for noteworthy accomplishments in the fields of architecture, as well as for the role played in developing significant architectural projects throughout their career.

Arch. Ivo Petrov is well-known Bulgarian architect, a great contributor to some of the most famous monuments and buildings in Bulgaria.He has been honored with the Order of Cyril and Methodius – First degree for great merits in the fields of culture, art, education and science.He started his 50 years career in architecture working at the Design Organization-Pleven. His first projects were the Soviet Technical Center and the Covered Cooperative Market in Pleven.His most recognizable project is the Pleven Panorama – the only monument of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula, designed together with arch. PlamenaTsacheva in the period 1976-1977.

Known for his passion of theater and art arch. Ivo Petrov is the architect of the “Ivan Radoev” Drama Theater and the Museum Complex – Pleven. His portfolio includes the design for theater sets and costumes of over 30 productions in Pleven, Dobrich and Plovdiv.

In 2004, he established the Sofia branch of “Ivo Petrov Architects” and set the fundamentals for one of the most prestigious architectural studios in Bulgaria. Today the studio – Ivo Petrov Architects is managed by his son, arch. Tsvetan Petrov and has become one of the most innovative, future-ready and biggest companies for architecture, urbanism, and interior design in Bulgaria.

For his 50 years of devotion to architecture, art and people arch. Ivo Petrov has built a legacy of monuments, buildings, art and a great team of professionals.

His most recognizable project is the Pleven Panorama – the only monument of its kind on the Balkan Peninsula, designed together with arch. PlamenaTsacheva in the period 1976-1977.
