Each building can tell stories – about what happens in it, in what times it lives or what people liked when it was designed. For its 45 years of age, the NHK Cultural Center is like a novel building.
With its key location and diversity of spaces, the Cultural center has established itself over the years as a center of great public importance. Its reconstruction contributed both to solving the problems related to operation and maintenance, and to expanding the range and frequency of possible events. The project made a new reading of the building in terms of the need for adequate cultural spaces – modern, affordable, flexible, attractive, part of the daily rhythm of the city and the people. Last but not least, the reconstruction of the building created a modern, recognizable and memorable architectural image, adequate to the environment and history of the building.
The implementation of the project took about a year and since the fall of 2020 the NHK Cultural center is open to visitors. The last year has brought many questions about how to use such public spaces. In the project we set principles of multi-functionality, integration and socialization – some of them will work and others – not. But we are convinced that history continues to be written and the building is its best narrator.
