While the Gasteig cultural center in Munich undergoes refurbishment―which will last several years―its functions will be housed in a temporary building in the Sendling neighborhood. During this period, the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra will perform in a modular concert hall with 1,800 seats, the design of which combines an efficient, sustainable modular construction with the requirements for a high-quality, acoustically sophisticated concert hall. This economical construction is quick to put up and can be relatively easily dismantled for reconstruction elsewhere: the loadbearing steel structure and the facade of the external rectangular envelope are standard systems available in the market; the prefabricated concert hall on the inside consists of a slot-in system of solid wood elements.
The new building connects with the transformer building, a listed historic monument that has been converted to a foyer. It forms the forum of the site, in front of which a central plaza opens out towards the water. Three additional modular buildings round off the ensemble and accommodate the City Library, the adult education center, and the University of Music and Performing Arts, previously housed in the Gasteig center.
