Biography

Gjergji Islami graduated in 2003 with High Honor in Architecture from Eastern Mediterranean University in Famagusta (North Cyprus). In 2009 completed the Master degree in “Instruments and Methodologies in Cultural Heritage Conservation and Valorization” (IMCHCV) at the University of Urbino “Carlo Bo” in Italy in collaboration with the University of Rome “Sapienza” and the Polytechnic University of Tirana.

From 2004 contributes as full time lecturer in FAU. During this period, has been involved in academic activity, research and various national and international projects. In 2016 completed his Ph.D. with the dissertation  Improving Energy Efficiency in Precast Panel Housing in Tirana.

Other fields of interest relate to: Environmental Sustainable Development, Territorial Planning, Housing, Socialist Architecture in Albania, and Conservation of Cultural Heritage.
Gjergji Islami is actively engaged also in design as an architect and consultant. He participated in several international competitions and has been awarded several prizes.

Islami is coauthor of a series of publications related to Albanian Socialist Architecture and has been published through texts and exhibitions in IUAV – Venice, La Biennale di Venezia, National Gallery of Kosovo, National Gallery of Arts – Albania, Bauwelt, Canadian Centre of Architecture etc.

In the period 2013 – 2017 held the position of Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Architecture and Urbanism.

From 2017 is head of the Internal Quality Assurance Unit in the Polytechnic University of Tirana.
