MEET THE SPEAKER at SHARE Georgia Forum 2024 \\ Caroline Bos, Co-founder, Principal Urban Planner UNStudio, The Netherlands
We are happy to announce that Caroline Bos, co-founder and principal urban planner at UNStudio will grace SHARE Georgia Forum 2024 on Octobe 11 with her presence as a speaker, offering valuable insights into the successful practice of the world-renowned office.
Caroline Bos is co-founder and principal urban planner at UNStudio based in The Netherlands. She is an Honorary Professor at the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning and she has taught as a guest lecturer at Princeton University, the Berlage Institute in Rotterdam, the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna and the Academy of Architecture in Arnhem. She studied art history at Birkbeck College of the University of London and completed a Master’s Degree in urban and regional planning at the Geosciences Faculty of the University of Utrecht. Together with Ben van Berkel she was co-editor of Forum (1985-86) and the ANY publication ‘Diagram Works’ (1998) and co-writer of a series of thought-provoking publications such as ‘Ben van Berkel Architect’ (1992), ‘Delinquent Visionaries’ (1990), ‘Mobile Forces’ (1994), ‘Move’ (1999), Unfold (2003), ‘Design Models’ (2006).
Caroline Bos initially worked in journalism before co-founding together with Ben van Berkel the office Van Berkel & Bos Architectuur Bureau in 1988, where she took on the role of being the internal critic for the practice, writing everything from employment contracts to essays and descriptions of projects that were yet to be designed. The firm was relaunched in 1998 under the name UnStudio (United Net), renouncing the inclusion of the authors’ name in the title of their company to better express their belief in the power of collaboration. UNStudio has been thus presenting itself as a network of specialists in architecture, urban development and infrastructure, a practice based on working principles revolving around the ideas of ‘sharing knowledge’ and ‘networking theory’.
“To design a successful infrastructure, architects should form their networking interaction map that needs to be worked separately and connected to each other” — states Caroline Bus.
UNstudio is now a 300-member office operating out of Amsterdam, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt, Dubai, Melbourne, and Austin, Texas. The critically acclaimed studio has built an immense and awe-inspiring portfolio of projects, with numerous celebrated designs. They describe their goal as designing and understanding future cities for people and accordingly they are involved in big interventions which have the power to shape the environment that people live in. No scale seems to be out of hand for UNStudio and no challenge too big. Their mission is to positively contribute to the societal challenges of urbanisation, climate change, ageing populations and socioeconomic inequality. They aim at leaving a worthwhile impact on the cities and people and little impact on the planet. UNStudio are dedicated to the practice of sustainable design, always taking into consideration issues like social and ecological sustainability right from the beginning of each project. In this sense they embedded new technological inputs and extensive research on new forms of culture, methodologies, materials and technology that are reshaping the world.
