Wang Shu, Laureate of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, joins the internationally renowned architects who will speak at SHARE X 2024 – Advanced Architecture Conference in Venice.

Wang Shu, co-founder of Amateur Architecture Studio and dean of the School of Architecture at the China Academy of Art, became the first Chinese citizen to win the Pritzker Prize, the world’s top prize in architecture.

The jury that awarded him in 2012, which included, among others, Pritzker Laureate Zaha Hadid, highlighted Wang’s “unique ability to evoke the past without making direct references to history” and called his work “timeless, deeply rooted in its context and yet universal.”

These accolades make the presence of the great Chinese architect on the list of speakers at the SHARE X Conference in Venice, on October 22, all the more fitting, considering the theme of the event, NEW into OLD in Architecture – Case studies from innovative insertions to architectural adaptations.

Alongside Wang Shu, presentations based on numerous case studies will be given by other representatives from world-renowned offices and international practices, providing the audience with the opportunity to learn firsthand about research-driven and innovative projects directly from research directors and experts.

Here are just a few examples:

Under the theme “Working in Historical Contexts,” Alasdair Graham, Partner, and Director at David Chipperfield (UK), will speak about the ”London School of Economics Firoz Lalji Global Hub” and the radical approach that makes it LSE’s first net zero carbon building.

Sebastien Ricard, Board Director at WilkinsonEyre (UK), will present the major restoration and repurposing of the iconic Grade II* listed ”Battersea Power Station”, preserving the building’s sense of scale and visual drama.

Emre Arolat, Founder of EAA (Turkey), will present two case studies: ”Istanbul Painting & Sculpture Museum” and ”Sancaklar Mosque”. In the first case, he will discuss the transformation of an entrepot into a high-quality museum that houses thousands of valuable works, including important pieces from late Ottoman to modern Turkish painting. The second case study will focus on “designing a mosque by distancing itself from current architectural discussions based on form and focusing solely on the essence of religious space.”

Ana Flor, Design Principal at Studio Gang (USA), will share insights about ”The Richard Gilder Center for Science, Education, and Innovation” at The American Museum of Natural History and how it was designed to amplify the Museum’s intellectual impact with experiential architecture that encourages exploration and discovery.

Two other case studies, ”Tripolis Amsterdam” and the ”Women and Children Centre Shenzhen”, will be the subject of Gideon Maasland‘s presentation, Director at MVRDV, Netherlands, under the theme “Redevelopments.” The first project involves a renovation scheme for the Tripolis office complex in Amsterdam, originally designed by Dutch architect Aldo van Eyck, and the second refers to the transformation of an old mixed-use tower into a vibrant and colorful skyscraper hosting a hotel and a wide range of facilities for the welfare of women and children.

In addition to the case studies presented by the 15 invited speakers and the technical presentations by our partners, the SHARE X Conference will also feature highly interactive workshops facilitated by leading innovation experts, offering opportunities to exchange experiences, gain new perspectives and insights during roundtable discussions, and network.

The host for all the happenings will be the M9 Museo del ‘900 (Museum of the 20th Century), an extraordinary cultural center in Venice Mestre.

The board of SHARE X Conference reunites Luca Molinari — architect, critic, curator, full professor of Theory and Architectural Design at the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli” and scientific director of M9 Museum, Roberto Beraldo — President Ordine degli Architetti Pianificatori Paesaggisti e Conservatori Venezia and Florin Mindirigiu — Founder and President of SHARE Architects.

SHARE X Conference in Venice is organized by SHARE Architects Society in collaboration with the Ordine degli Architetti Pianificatori Paesaggisti e Conservatori Venezia, under the patronage of the Federazione Regionale Ordini Architetti PPC Veneto and the Fondazione Degli Architetti, Pianificatori, Paesaggisti e Conservatori della Provincia Di Venezia.
