On May 14th, the Museum of Ethnography Budapest welcomed over 200 attendees for the 8th edition of the International Architecture Forum SHARE Hungary 2024.
The event showcased a distinguished panel of architects and specialists, including César Frías Enciso from MORPH, Stuart Grahn of GRIMSHAW, and Marios Tsiliakos from Foster + Partners, alongside notable speakers from Hungary, Spain, UK, Iran, Luxembourg, Turkey, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Cyprus, Slovakia, and Romania.
The SHARE Hungary 2024 Forum was organized by SHARE Architects, the largest network dedicated to architecture and construction professionals in Central and South Eastern Europe, together with the Magyar Építész Kamara (MÉK), with the support of Muskita (Official Partner), ISOPAN, ȘIȘECAM (Gold Partners) and Steel Auction Market, Aluprof – Hungary (Sponsors).

Angelo Maggi, Associate Professor at Università Iuav di Venezia, delved into the life and legacy of Egle Renata Trincanato (1910-1998), an Italian architect whose remarkable contributions to Venetian architecture and culture have often gone unnoticed. Trincanato’s expertise as an architectural historian and watercolorist shaped her illustrious career, marked by publications elucidating Venetian architecture and prestigious appointments including Director of the Museo di Palazzo Ducale. Maggi’s presentation, “Egle Renata Trincanato and her Uncelebrated Venice,” seeked to shine a well-deserved spotlight on Trincanato’s invaluable yet overlooked role in preserving and celebrating the architectural heritage of Venice.

In her presentation “Urban Landscapes of the Future,” Nora Vranova, President of the Slovak Chamber of Architects, Slovakia, showcases winning proposals from recent architectural competitions overseen by the Chamber, emphasizing urban planning and public space development in Slovakia. Case studies include the restoration and development of the Sliač Spa, the transformation of Freedom Square in Banská Bystrica, the Slovak Academy of Sciences Campus in Bratislava, the revitalization of Depot Park in Trnava, and the urban regeneration project “Trnava – The Quarter.” Vranova’s talk delves into innovative approaches to shaping urban environments and fostering community engagement.

Nora Demeter’s exploration centered on the nuanced interplay between complex architectural projects and the preservation of human comfort and proportion. As an interior architect, she meticulously examined how interior spaces shape and are shaped by overarching architectural designs, emphasizing the crucial role of human-centric design principles across cultural, residential, and commercial contexts.

Case Study: Reconstruction of the Drechsler Palace
In “Drechsler Palace 2.0 – W Budapest Hotel,” Belá Bánáti, Owner of Bánáti + Hartvig Architects, Hungary, unveiled the transformation of Budapest’s historic Drechsler Palace, originally envisioned by Ödön Lechner, into the prestigious W Budapest Hotel. Following nearly two decades of disuse, the 19th-century landmark underwent meticulous reconstruction while maintaining its listed status. Belá Bánáti’s presentation highlighted the restoration’s centerpiece: a captivating courtyard adorned with ornate façades, now sheltered by a graceful, veil-like glass roof. This architectural intervention not only safeguards the space from the elements but also fosters an intimate, human-scale ambiance, reimagining the palace as a vibrant hub within Budapest’s architectural landscape.

With Palas Campus marking the 100th project by Yazgan, the presentation delves into its facade design, examining architectural concepts, material choices, and construction techniques. The Skopje East Gate Project illustrates how flexible design systems inform facade design in large-scale developments. Additionally, the presentation underscores the significance of technology and innovation in facade design through the YDA Center, offering insights into the evolving role of facades as interfaces in contemporary architecture.

“The Station, the City, and the Fifth Elevation” featured Stuart Grahn, Associate Principal at GRIMSHAW, UK, as the keynote speaker. Drawing on case studies such as HS2 Curzon Street Station and London Bridge Station, Grahn showcased Grimshaw’s pioneering work in integrating major transport hubs into urban environments and driving urban regeneration. He emphasized the creation of accessible “city rooms” within these stations, seamlessly blending internal and external spaces to enhance passenger experiences. With a focus on preserving historical significance while embracing ambitious concepts, Grahn demonstrated how design for construction can create unique environments that celebrate each station’s identity while revitalizing their surrounding areas.

Over the past 25 years, SHARE Architects forums have become a key networking platform for architects and constructors in Central and South Eastern Europe. Currently, SHARE Architects events are held in 16 countries and have developed a community of over 50,000 professionals around them.
